People have always used stars to navigate and get oriented from where they are to where they need to get to. That’s our role here!
Also, the expanse of the universe reminds me of how small and dependent I am on my Creator, and how everything is sustained by His power. The stars inspire awe in me. For example, did you know that The Whirlpool Galaxy is 31 million light-years away, and has 300 billion stars in it? Here are some comparisons about stars to get a sense of their magnitude – starting with our sun.
Is 93 million miles away.
If the Earth is a golf ball, we can fit 960,000 earths in the sun – that would fill a school bus.
It is 2x the size of the orbit of the earth around the sun.
It is the equivalent of 6 Empire State Buildings tall if the earth is a golf ball.
One could fit 262 trillion earths inside of it. That is like filling the Superdome 3,000 times over with golf balls.
It is 2 golden gate bridges wide if earth is a golf ball.
2.7 quadrillion earths in this star.
A million seconds = 12 days.
A billion seconds in the past = 1975.
A trillion seconds in the past takes us to 29,700 BC.
A quadrillion seconds is 30 million years in the past.
